The Power of Prayer

One of the amazing parts of this journey has been the support of friends, family, coworkers and even people I have never met. Daily we receive encouraging notes, email messages, text messages and phone calls. The number of people that are invested in this little adventure has been a humbling thing to behold. Autumn and I are certainly in the middle of things, but the fact is that there are dozens of others that are also in this with us.

Many people have been praying for our family. Some people have even sent us those prayers through comments on this blog and through email. Others have been sending positive thoughts and energy our way throughout our time here at St. Luke's. I have mentioned it several times and it remains just as true now that we feel them all.

The reason I mention the prayers and thoughts is that I wanted to tell you how they have helped Trinity. As you know, Trinity has hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. It is a very fancy way of saying that Trinity has global brain dysfunction due to low oxygen and restricted blood supply. This isn't news. It's a very vague diagnosis because they really don't know what the heck caused all of this. People with brain injuries like this generally fall into one of two categories. The first is generally mild, with recovery coming only hours after the event. The other type is when there is brain cell death involved. Evidently there are many children who never bounce back from this type of injury. Trinity is in the second category, since she showed evidence in her MRI of brain cell death. But that's not the whole story. That's where your prayers and positive thoughts come in.

Trinity IS bouncing back. She is even pushing herself up into the sitting position. Granted, she fall over a lot, but she even catches herself when she falls sometimes. She is playing games with us and rolling over quite a bit. She almost crawled a little too! What I am saying is that she is recovering from something that many children in the same situation do not recover from. I would call that a miracle and I am fully convinced that all your prayers and thoughts are what made it happen. Jeremiah 29:12-13 says:

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call
upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Here's the little miracle in action today:

Okay, not a lot of action here, but she's darn cute!

We went for our first family walk around the pediatric unit. Trinity had a great time, but boy is she going to be mad when she finds out those hospital gowns are open in the back!

Just hanging out with dad. She's not so good with her head yet, so she needs a little support now and again. But the progress is amazing. She really likes to sit up now that she remembered how!
Two silly ladies, hamming it up!

P.S. I am pretty sure we get to go home tomorrow!

  1. What a wonderful post to start my day! The three of you have been on my heart and mind throughout the past week and a half. You are walking your journey very beautifully and you are seeing the light instead of focusing on the dark. Tears and hugs your way! It is so good to see Trinity's smile, very contagious!
